When a high-level attacker is going against an opponent who doesn’t have the ability to block and defend, It’s a no-brainer that they will choose to be more aggressive to win points. Most tennis players that come into the sport have the ground strokes necessary to be good at attacking but lack the hand speed they need to defend at the net and win most of the hand battles that we see in pickleball. Hand speed is something that comes with a lot of drilling and a lot of practice. The truth is that it’s much easier to be offensive than to be defensive. While there are many answers to this question, I think the simplest, is that it works! With that being said, why are so many players going to the 3 rd shot drive and why is the ball being attacked more rapidly than in years past? It doesn’t matter how good your drive is, you still must be able to execute a 3 rd shot drop to be successful. I still believe that the most important shot in pickleball is the 3 rd shot drop. While these are very crucial aspects of high-level play, we are seeing the percentages of the soft game slowly drop. No more are the days of just third-shot drops and long dinking exchanges. As the game of pickleball evolves, we are seeing a lot of changes to how the game is being played.
